About This Audiobook

Elizabeth Bear’s *We, Robots* isn’t your usual cold, clinical robot anthology—it’s a sharp, human(ish) collection that treats machines as the emotional and ethical mirrors of their creators. These seven stories don’t just ask *what* robots are, but *who* they could be, wrapping philosophical depth in tight, contemporary sci-fi. Bear’s prose dances between wit and melancholy, whether a repair bot learns the cost of loyalty or a sentient war machine confronts its own obsolescence. The audiobook’s brevity is its strength; each tale punches above its weight, leaving you wanting more without ever overstaying its welcome.

Narrators Amy Bruce and J. P. Linton elevate the material with crisp, character-driven performances. Bruce’s voice drips with dry humor for a rogue lawyer-bot in a corporate dystopia, while Linton’s gravelly tones sell the weary gravitas of a machine confronting its own mortality. The production is clean and minimalist, letting the stories—rather than sound design—drive the experience. If you crave sci-fi that’s cerebral but accessible, this is a feast of ideas served in easily digestible portions.

Editor's Review ★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

I went into *We, Robots* expecting another anthology of cold, logical automatons, but Bear’s stories surprised me by humanizing their mechanical protagonists without veering into sentimentality. The standout, *The Romance of the Quantum Vampire*, is a gothic-tinged gem about a vampire-bot marked by its creator’s obsession—both a love letter to vintage horror and a meditation on legacy. Bruce’s narration shines here, her voice dripping with arch cynicism that perfectly matches the story’s tone. That said, the collection isn’t without hiccups. *The Bitterwood Bible* felt tonally mismatched—its biblical allegory clashing awkwardly with the book’s otherwise grounded sci-fi voice—and the pacing drags slightly in the middle. Linton’s narration, while excellent, occasionally swaps nuance for gravitas, making a few lighter moments land with unintended weight. But the flaws are minor. This is a smart, swift listen that rewards attention without demanding it, perfect for commutes or late-night thought experiments. If you like your robots flawed, funny, and occasionally heartbreaking, this won’t waste your time.
