Tamala Shelton’s performance sells this brilliantly: her Alyssa sounds like she’s holding her breath 90% of the time, and when she finally snaps, the rawness in Shelton’s voice made me flinch. The supporting cast gets equal care—even minor characters feel distinct, like the Remnants’ gruff mentor, whose gravelly tone Shelton nails without slipping into caricature. The pacing is where opinions might divide. Noni’s prose is lean, almost cinematic, but the breakneck speed sometimes sacrifices emotional breathing room. A mid-book reveal about Vanik’s endgame felt rushed, and I wished we’d lingered longer in the fallout of Alyssa’s darker choices. That said, the audiobook’s production elevates the weaker spots: Shelton’s delivery during the ‘memory invasion’ scenes is *masterclass* voice acting, blending whispers and screams so effectively I had to pause and collect myself.
