About This Audiobook

*What I Really Think of You* isn’t your typical star-crossed romance—it’s a razor-sharp, darkly comic collision between piety and passion. M.E. Kerr, a master of subversive YA, drops us into the lives of two teens: one the cynical daughter of traveling faith healers, the other the golden-boy son of a televangelist empire. Their meet-cute is more like a meet-*clash*, and the audiobook’s dual narration (Zach Villa’s smoldering sarcasm vs. Amy Landon’s weary, worldly wisdom) turns their verbal sparring into electric theater. This isn’t a book about finding God—it’s about the messy, hilarious, sometimes painful business of outgrowing the gods your parents gave you.

The audiobook’s real magic lies in its pacing: short, punchy chapters keep the energy high, while the narrators’ distinct styles—Villa’s slick, performative charm for the preacher’s kid, Landon’s dry, seen-it-all tone for the skeptic—make their perspectives feel like competing podcasts. Kerr’s dialogue crackles with the kind of wit that demands to be heard aloud, and the production leans into it, with subtle shifts in tone that highlight the absurdity of evangelical spectacle. At just over four hours, it’s a tight, bingeable listen that never preaches (ironically) but *does* leave you questioning every Sunday school lesson you ever slept through.

Editor's Review ★★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

I’ll admit, I side-eyed this one at first—‘teen romance meets evangelical drama’ sounded like a setup for afterschool-special schmaltz. But *What I Really Think of You* is anything but. Kerr’s writing is so razor-edged it could cut through a church steeple, and the audiobook’s dual narration turns what could’ve been a gimmick into a masterclass in contrast. Zach Villa *owns* the role of Stony, the preacher’s son whose charm is a weapon; his delivery swings from silky persuasion to raw vulnerability in a heartbeat. Meanwhile, Amy Landon’s Franny sounds like she’s two seconds from lighting a cigarette in the confession booth—her world-weary cynicism is the perfect foil. Together, they make the chemistry between these two feel less like insta-love and more like a slow-burn fuse. That said, the pacing isn’t perfect. The middle act drags slightly as the plot pivots from satirical family drama to a more conventional road-trip structure, and Kerr’s habit of resolving emotional beats with quippy one-liners occasionally undercuts the weight of heavier moments (a late-game family confrontation, in particular, could’ve used more breathing room). The production is otherwise flawless—no jarring volume shifts, no awkward pauses—though I’d kill for a director’s cut with just a *hint* more atmospheric sound design during the revival-tent scenes. Still, the final act sticks the landing so hard it’s worth the minor stumbles. If you’ve ever rolled your eyes at a sermon or crushed on someone you *shouldn’t*, this audiobook will feel like eavesdropping on your own rebellious thoughts—just with better comebacks.
