Christina Traister’s narration is the kind that makes you forget you’re listening to an audiobook. Her voice cracks just enough to sell the desperation in Riley’s denials, yet glides into icy detachment when the protagonist lies to herself—or us. The performance elevates Kaufman’s prose from competent to compelling, especially in scenes where Riley’s internal monologue clashes with her outward calm. My only critique? Traister’s vocal range can feel a tad restrained in the first third of the book, as if she’s holding back until the story’s irrational weight demands more. It’s a minor quibble in what is otherwise a masterclass in vocal restraint vs. revelation. The story’s strength is its refusal to coddle the listener. Kaufman doesn’t spoon-feed you Riley’s traumas; he scatters them like breadcrumbs through a dark forest, daring you to piece together the truth before the narrative collapses under its own contradictions. The pacing is expertly judged—slow enough to luxuriate in the psychological unraveling, fast enough to keep the pages (or, in this case, the chapters) turning. That said, the ending lands like a gut punch for some listeners: it’s thematically bold but emotionally unresolved. If you need your mysteries tied up with a bow, this won’t satisfy. If you’re after a story that burrows under your skin and refuses to leave, Traister’s performance and Kaufman’s sharp writing make it a must-listen.
