About This Audiobook

Chloe doesn’t believe in happy endings—or any endings, really—except the ones she writes for herself. At 18, she’s already mastered the art of disappearing: no permanent address, no attachments, just miles of asphalt and the hum of her stolen motorcycle beneath her. *Where the Road Takes Me* isn’t your typical coming-of-age romance; it’s a raw, unfiltered sprint through backroads and bad decisions where love is the one thing Chloe swore she’d never let slow her down. Jay McLean’s prose crackles with the same restless energy as her protagonist, making this a YA romance for readers who’d rather burn out than fade away.

The audiobook’s narration duo, Nick Podehl and Laura Hamilton, deliver a dynamic performance that mirrors Chloe’s duality. Podehl’s gruff, cigarette-roughened voice suits her defiance, while Hamilton’s emotional range breathes life into the women who dare to see past her armor. Together, they turn a familiar premise—rebel meets soft heart—into something electric, especially in the charged silences that speak louder than words. If you’ve ever wanted a love story that feels like a midnight drive with the windows down, this is it.

AudioBook Atlas

I went into this audiobook expecting another tired trope of the lone wolf finding redemption through a love interest, but McLean and her narrators surprised me by refusing to soften Chloe’s edges. Podehl’s voice is a perfect match—raspy enough to convince you he’s smoked a pack a day for years, yet capable of surprising tenderness when Chloe lets her guard down. Hamilton, meanwhile, nails the inflections of the few characters who actually get under Chloe’s skin, particularly in a gut-punch scene where a quiet conversation reveals more than a dozen declarations ever could. That said, the pacing drags a bit in the middle act, with some detours that feel more like filler than character development. And while Chloe’s stubbornness is the point, her refusal to grow for an entire novel starts to feel less like defiance and more like stubbornness for stubbornness’ sake. Still, the payoff lands hard when the road finally leads Chloe somewhere she didn’t plan—and neither did I. The production quality is top-tier, with seamless transitions between narrators and a sound mix that puts you squarely in the driver’s seat. If you’re in the mood for a romance that doesn’t apologize for being messy, loud, or a little dangerous, hit play and let the road do the talking.
