Rike Schmid is the reason this audiobook breathes. She doesn’t just read the lines—she inhabits them, toggling between Lena’s tentative humanity and Louise’s predatory allure with a chilling duality. Her delivery of Louise’s monologues is particularly hypnotic, each word dripping with the kind of confidence that makes you lean in closer, even as it should repel you. The pacing is relentless; even the quieter moments hum with tension, like the calm before a storm you can’t outrun. That said, the audiobook isn’t without flaws. Some side characters blur together in the narration, their voices too similar to fully distinguish in the heat of the climax. And while Hohlbein’s gothic atmosphere is a strength, a few transitions between scenes feel abrupt, as if the editor feared lingering too long in the dark. Still, the flaws are minor in the face of what works.
