Hearing Ila's dialogue bounce off the slightly more gruff tones of her partner adds a delightfully gritty dimension to their already engaging dynamic. The supernatural elements are woven seamlessly into the fast-paced plot, keeping the tension high throughout. Wolfhart masterfully builds the mystery surrounding the targeted mages, ensuring suspicion lingers amongst the usual suspects. My only minor critique is that the sheer volume of lore introduced sometimes slows the momentum slightly, demanding rereads to fully grasp the intricate supernatural politics at play. Similarly, the mystery twist felt, while shocking, could have perhaps benefited from a hint more foreshadowing for dedicated fans deeply immersed in the previous books. Despite these small points, the narration and story hook are undeniably compelling.
