Hartman’s magic system is refreshingly *limited*: spells require sacrifice, and the wizards aren’t just tired; they’re *broken*. Richard Shepard isn’t a chosen one—he’s a relic clinging to relevance, and that vulnerability makes the action hit harder. The opening siege scene, where magic and plasma rifles collide in a chaotic, muddy slog, sold me instantly. This isn’t clean heroism; it’s survival by teeth and nails. Guy Williams’ performance is stellar, but not flawless. His pacing in exposition-heavy sections occasionally drags, making the worldbuilding feel denser than it is—though to be fair, Hartman’s lore *is* dense. Where Williams excels is in the quieter moments: the way Shepard’s voice cracks when he’s lying to himself, or the cold precision he uses when negotiating with allies he doesn’t trust. The sound design is subtle but effective—spells *hiss* like static, and the rare musical stings underscore key reveals without overpowering. My only real gripe? The female characters sometimes blur together in tone, which is a shame given how distinct they are on the page. Still, this is a masterclass in how to make a 15-hour audiobook feel urgent. If you love *The Black Company*’s cynicism but wish it had spaceships, or *The Expanse*’s geopolitics but with blood magic, this is your fix.
