X Minus One

I went into *X Minus One* expecting a throwaway pulp sci-fi short, but Heinlein’s razor-edged storytelling turned it into something far more satisfying. The narrator’s clipped, workmanlike cadence made the absurd premise—the idea of conveyor-belt roads as the only way to escape traffic in a hyper-urbanized future—feel oddly believable. The story’s strength lies in its economy; Heinlein wastes no words, and neither does the narration, which keeps the pacing brisk and the focus laser-tight. My only gripe is that the ending arrives with such abrupt finality that I felt a little whiplashed, as if the story had run out of tape. The uncredited narrator also left me wondering if a more dynamic voice might have elevated the material further, but the performance is solid enough to avoid pulling you out of the experience. For a half-hour listen, this packs a punch, offering a glimpse into Heinlein’s knack for making the far-fetched feel just plausible enough to unsettle.
