But *Yumi and the Nightmare Painter* disarmed me within chapters, largely thanks to the narration duo of Reading and Kramer, who turn what could’ve been a gimmicky split POV into something electric. Reading’s Yumi is all jagged edges and repressed panic, her voice tightening during nightmare sequences until you *feel* the claws scraping at your own door. Kramer, meanwhile, gives Hoid a world-weary charm that never tips into smarm—his delivery of the painter’s cryptic asides had me pausing to rewind more than once. The production team deserves credit, too: the audio mixing is subtle but effective, with a faint, dissonant hum creeping into Yumi’s chapters that disappears the moment we switch to Hoid’s perspective. That said, this isn’t a flawless listen. The pacing stumbles in the middle, where Sanderson’s love of lore dumps clashes with the romance’s need for momentum. A few of Hoid’s monologues drag, and Yumi’s nightmares, while atmospheric, start to blur together after the third iteration. But the payoff—a climax that weaves together art, trauma, and cosmic horror—is worth the occasional slog. What lingers isn’t just the love story, but the way the audiobook *sounds*: like a painting you can’t look away from, even when it terrifies you. If you love fantasy that’s equal parts cerebral and visceral, and narrators who *become* their characters, this is a must-listen. Just maybe not before bed.
