Schwab's world-building is meticulously crafted, drawing listeners into a rich tapestry of characters, politics, and magic systems. The performance of Kate Reading and Michael Kramer is top-notch, with each bringing their own distinct voice and style to the characters. Reading shines in her portrayal of Lila, bringing a delightful mix of wit and determination to the feisty thief. Kramer's narration as Kell is equally impressive, capturing the Antari's sense of duty and vulnerability. One minor critique I have is the occasional jarring transition between narration styles, often when the two narrators seamlessly switch between each other's storylines. However, this is a minor quibble in what is otherwise a gripping and immersive listen. With its engaging narrative, memorable characters, and rich world-building, A Darker Shade of Magic is a must-listen for fans of urban fantasy and science fiction.
