Listening to this audiobook was a profound experience, largely thanks to the multi-narrator approach. Allison Hiroto brings a youthful vibrancy and innocence to Aomame that feels essential to her character. The male narrators, Marc Vietor and Mark Boyett, handle Tengo's intellectual depth and the Inspector's wry, observational style with equal aplomb. Their distinct voices make the dual timelines feel even more separate and distinct, preventing confusion. The narration enhances the dreamlike quality and the subtle humor woven throughout Murakami's prose. While the story's length means it feels substantial, some denser, more philosophical sections drag slightly for me, mirroring the internal pondering rather than quickening the pace. However, the overall performance is top-notch, capturing nuances and emotional beats that might be lost in text alone. It’s a faithful and engaging adaptation.
