When I first pressed play on "Killing Commendatore," I expected the usual Murakami oddities, but Kirby Heyborne’s voice turned the novel into something almost cinematic. His delivery is deliberately paced, giving each of Murakami’s intricate descriptions room to breathe. In the early chapters, as the painter unpacks his boxes in the mountain house, Heyborne’s soft, measured tone mirrors the character’s cautious re‑entry into a world that feels both familiar and alien. The occasional shift to a huskier register when the Commendatore appears—an ominous, painted figure that steps into reality—adds a tangible tension that the text alone sometimes leaves vague. The production quality is commendable; the subtle background ambience—crackling fire, distant wind—creates a soundscape that feels like a companion rather than a distraction. However, the audiobook’s length (over 28 hours) means the story’s deliberate slowness can feel indulgent at times, especially in the middle section where the plot meanders through endless philosophical musings. A tighter edit might have kept the momentum sharper. Still, the final act, where the protagonist confronts the hidden pit and the mysteries of Amada’s legacy, is delivered with a crescendo in Heyborne’s voice that feels earned and satisfying. If you enjoy literary fiction that rewards patience and a narrator who lets the words linger, this is a standout listen; if you prefer brisk, plot‑driven narratives, the lingering pace may test your stamina.
