The answer is… mostly. There are moments, particularly in quieter, introspective scenes, where the synthetic cadence feels just a touch too polished, like a marionette’s strings are showing. But here’s the thing: Virtual Voice nails the action. The kidnapping sequence crackles with urgency, the dialogue flows without the unnatural pauses or over-enunciation that plague some AI narrations, and the pacing never drags, even during the slower moments of burgeoning attraction. The story itself is where Cahill shines. The central conflict—Matthew’s frustration at being saddled with a woman he didn’t choose, and the bride (whose name, ironically, we never learn) grappling with her own agency—is handled with a deft hand. The romance unfolds gradually, with Cahill resisting the urge to rush to a happily-ever-after, instead letting the characters’ flaws and hesitations feel authentic. My one critique? The secondary characters, particularly the villainous raider, verge on caricature, and the resolution wraps up a tad too neatly. Still, for anyone who’s ever been ambushed by love in the most inconvenient way, this audiobook delivers a satisfying blend of grit and tenderness. The narration may not be perfect, but it’s good enough to keep you hooked until the final, unexpected kiss.
