I went into *A Game with No Rules* expecting laser battles and rogue AIs, but what I got was something more nuanced—and far more compelling. Atamanov builds a crumbling empire with such meticulous detail that you can feel the institutional rot. The story unfolds through shifting alliances, backroom deals, and the quiet, relentless erosion of authority. It’s less about who has the biggest fleet and more about who controls the narrative. Neil Hellegers’ narration is a masterclass in subtlety. His measured tone and crisp articulation make complex political maneuvering digestible, even gripping. I especially appreciated how he differentiated the Houses—not through exaggerated accents, but through cadence and restraint. That said, the pacing isn’t for everyone. The first third lingers heavily on exposition, and there were moments I wished for a bit more character intimacy. The protagonist, while intelligent, feels emotionally distant—a byproduct of the novel’s focus on systems over individuals. Still, the audiobook’s production is flawless, with clean audio and no distracting effects. It’s the kind of sci-fi that lingers, forcing you to reconsider what power really means. If you’re tired of good-vs-evil tropes and want something politically sharp, this one’s worth the time.
