About This Audiobook

Michael Atamanov’s *In Service of the Pharaoh* is a romp through a world where magic isn’t just real—it’s bureaucratically oppressive. Sergeant, our so-called ‘Beast Catcher,’ is stuck in a backwater post with a cat that’s more competent than he is, a local aristocracy that’s more interested in gossip than governance, and a plot that escalates from absurd to outright surreal. The humor isn’t just dry; it’s actively hostile to anyone expecting dignity or coherence. Atamanov’s prose is brisk, his worldbuilding is dense but never impenetrable, and the stakes feel real even when the logic isn’t. If you’ve ever wanted to watch a protagonist flail through a universe that actively conspires against him—while still rooting for the guy—this is your audiobook.

Narrator James Fouhey is the secret weapon here. His delivery nails Sergeant’s mix of self-loathing and reluctant heroism, switching seamlessly between deadpan sarcasm and genuine, understated pathos. Fouhey’s pacing is relentless, mirroring the book’s breakneck energy, and his vocal range breathes life into a cast of quirky, often ridiculous side characters. The production quality is crisp, with just enough ambient texture to avoid feeling sterile, and Fouhey’s timing is so precise it’s like he’s performing a one-man play. This isn’t a story that leans on subtlety, and neither does the narration—it’s all in the conviction with which Fouhey sells the absurdity.

Editor's Review ★★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

I went into *In Service of the Pharaoh* expecting another litRPG grind, but Atamanov’s world is so much stranger. Sergeant isn’t a chosen one; he’s a glorified pest control officer with a knack for surviving by dumb luck, and the magic system reads like Kafka meets Dungeons & Dragons. Fouhey’s narration sells this weirdness without winking at the audience, which is crucial—this book’s humor works best when it’s played straight. I laughed out loud more times than I expected, especially during the cat’s deadpan commentary (yes, the cat gets his own POV chapters, and it’s brilliant). That said, the middle act drags more than it should. Atamanov piles on subplots involving rival factions and political intrigue, and while the worldbuilding is impressively detailed, some threads feel like they’re just holding the story together until the next big set piece. Fouhey’s performance can’t fully compensate for the pacing hiccups, but he comes close. The ending is satisfyingly messy, which feels intentional—like the author decided the journey was more important than the destination. If you’re here for polished prose and tidy resolutions, look elsewhere. If you want a story that’s messy, funny, and weirdly heartfelt, this might just be your next obsession.
