The protagonist isn’t a dashing officer or a reluctant hero—he’s a man being ground down by the machinery of war, and the audiobook’s Virtual Voice narration amplifies that detachment. The flat, almost robotic cadence works surprisingly well for the first half, making the rare cracks in the soldier’s composure hit harder. But by the climax, I found myself wishing for a human narrator who could convey the rawness of the protagonist’s unraveling with more vocal texture. The pacing is where this audiobook shines. At 2h20m, there’s no fat—every scene serves the central question: *How much can a person endure before they stop recognizing themselves?* Lam’s descriptions of camp life are particularly vivid, like the way she lingers on the stench of wet wool and gunpowder, or the ritualistic cleaning of a rifle as a stand-in for prayer. My one critique is the underdeveloped secondary characters; the comrades feel like shadows, which weakens the emotional stakes when losses occur. Still, the ending—ambiguous and haunting—lingers like a half-healed wound. If you’re tired of war stories that glorify suffering, this one’s for you. Just don’t expect catharsis.
