Building on Love

I went into *Building on Love* expecting another formulaic romance, but Janice Lam’s novel completely subverted my expectations. The chemistry between the leads, Mara and Daniel, isn’t built on puppy-dog eyes and forced chemistry—it’s forged in shared struggle. Mara, a former soldier adjusting to life with a prosthetic, isn’t a saintly figure; she’s prickly, guarded, and utterly real. Daniel, a once-successful entrepreneur facing financial ruin, is equally flawed, though his ego trips him up more than once. Their dynamic feels earned, not manufactured, and their slow-burn relationship is the heart of the book. The narration by Virtual Voice was a gamble that paid off. At first, I was skeptical of a synthetic voice handling such an emotional story, but the performance grew on me. The lack of vocal inflection sometimes made the quieter scenes feel flat, and there were a few too many instances where the tone veered into overly cheerful when the material called for something more subdued. But the pacing and clarity were excellent, making it easy to sink into the story. Production-wise, the audiobook is clean and well-mastered, with no distracting background noise. If you’re a romance fan who craves depth over fluff, this is a standout listen—but be prepared to feel every bruise along the way.
