I approached *A Throne from the Ashes* expecting another rehash of "chosen one" tropes, but Peñaranda’s worldbuilding and Faythe’s complexity blew me away. The first act drags a bit—Faythe’s found-family dynamic with the rebels feels overstuffed, and the political maneuvering could’ve been tighter. However, once the story pivots to her literal and metaphorical battles, the pacing hits a stride that’s relentless. Lagelee’s performance elevates everything; her portrayal of Faythe’s internal fractures—when she’s torn between vengeance and mercy—is heartbreakingly real. The side characters are where this audiobook truly shines, especially the morally gray elder statesman whose voice Lagelee nails with a mix of weary wisdom and hidden menace. My biggest gripe is the ending, which wraps up too neatly given the brutality of the journey. The resolution feels rushed, like Peñaranda wanted to tie up loose ends but didn’t want to actually commit to the emotional fallout. That said, the audiobook’s production is flawless—crisp audio, subtle sound design (that battle scene’s cacophony gave me chills), and zero distracting mouth clicks. If you’re in the mood for a fantasy that treats its characters like humans instead of pawns, this is a must-listen. Just brace for an emotional gut-punch in the final act.
