I listened to *After You’ve Gone* in one breathless afternoon because the narration team—led by Stephanie Einstein, Tyla Collier, and the rest of the stellar cast—turned what could’ve been a stagey, dialogue-heavy slog into a tense, almost cinematic experience. Einstein, voicing the protagonist, nails the brittleness of someone clinging to denial while her voice cracks under the weight of guilt; Collier’s performance as the alleged murderer is chillingly calm, the kind of eerie serenity that makes you question whether she’s a victim or a predator. The ensemble’s chemistry is electric, especially in scenes where fear boils over into accusations, and the production team ensures that the silence between lines feels intentional, like a held breath before a scream. That said, the audiobook stumbles slightly in the pacing department during the first act. Hunt’s atmospheric dread is compelling, but the early scenes drag as the characters’ backstories trickle in, making the first 30 minutes feel more atmospheric than propulsive. By the midpoint, though, the story hits its stride with the force of a sledgehammer to the ribs. My only other critique? The ending lands with a thud that’s more abrupt than satisfying—like the sound of a door slamming shut on a conversation you weren’t ready to end.
