Abraham’s strength has always been systems—whether it’s the cold math of space politics in *The Expanse* or, here, the brutal calculus of a city where guilds, nobles, and criminals all think they’re playing the same game (they’re not). The story follows four perspectives: a disgraced noblewoman, a thug with a code, a scholar with a secret, and a laborer who’s *done*. Their threads tangle slowly, but the payoff is worth it, especially when the magic system—tied to bloodlines and buried history—starts bleeding into the plot. Nankani’s narration is the audiobook’s secret weapon. She doesn’t over-embroider the prose; she lets Abraham’s dialogue (which crackles with the rhythm of street patter and courtly threats) carry the weight. Her pacing is deliberate, almost lazy in the best way—like a storyteller leaning against a bar, knowing you’re not going anywhere. My only gripe? The sound design is *too* subtle. A few more ambient cues (the clink of coins, distant shouts) could’ve deepened the immersion, especially in scenes where the city’s chaos is the real protagonist. And while the political maneuvering is delicious, the middle act sags slightly under its own scheming—you’ll need patience for the long con. But if you love fantasy that’s more *Le Carré* than *Lord of the Rings*, this is your next obsession.
