Green’s voice work is a masterclass in character distinction—his Thorgrim is all rough edges and raw determination, while the nobles sound like they’ve had their noses surgically removed to sound superior. The dragon battles are where this production truly shines; Green’s roar is a seismic audio event that made my dog bolt for the hallway. That said, Rice’s world-building occasionally skips a beat—we’re told Thorgrim’s village is poor, but the contrast with the opulence of the noble’s manors never feels visceral enough to match the stakes. The romance subplot also feels shoehorned in, like it was added because “every YA fantasy needs one” rather than because Thorgrim or the plot demanded it. Pacing is this audiobook’s secret weapon. Green never lingers on moments meant to breathe, keeping the story hurtling forward like a runaway dragon cart. The fight scenes crackle with energy, and even the political maneuvering doesn’t drag as much as it could have. My biggest critique? Some of Thorgrim’s internal monologues feel overly expository, as if Rice is worried listeners won’t pick up on the stakes without a neon sign. But Green sells even the clunkiest lines with conviction, and the sheer momentum of the plot overrides most of the rough edges. If you crave a fantasy where the hero isn’t chosen by prophecy but grinds his way to greatness through blood, sweat, and fire-forged weapons, this bundle delivers—with a narration performance that elevates the material far above its peers.
