Mark Elstob’s narration is the secret weapon of *Ahriman: Unchanged*. His voice is a chameleon—one moment a weary, ancient consciousness reciting the weight of millennia, the next a snarling, broken thing clinging to survival. He sells the absurdity of Ahriman’s godhood without slipping into parody, and his grasp of the material’s tonal shifts (from clinical sci-fi detachment to full-throated cosmic horror) is nothing short of masterclass. The pacing never drags, even when French indulges in dense, philosophical tangents—Elstob’s timing keeps the momentum alive, though I’d argue the book’s middle act could’ve benefited from tighter editing to avoid some of the more meandering passages. That said, *Ahriman: Unchanged* isn’t for everyone. French’s prose is dense with lore, and while Elstob’s performance is stellar, readers who prefer streamlined narratives might find themselves adrift in the sea of Ahriman’s internal monologues. The production’s sound design is minimal but effective, though I could’ve done without the occasional overuse of reverb in quieter scenes—it occasionally muddles Elstob’s delivery. Still, the flaws are minor in the grand scheme. This is a bold, uncompromising listen that rewards patience and rewards even more those who crave sci-fi with the gravitas of theological horror.
