As an editor who’s slogged through more than my fair share of recycled alien-invasion tropes, *Alien Alliance* initially struck me as another paint-by-numbers space romp. But Turner’s relentless energy and willingness to let his characters be deeply unlikable—while still rooting for them—won me over. Virtual Voice’s narration is the audiobook’s standout feature, especially in its handling of the mercenaries’ dialogue. There’s a tangible weariness in their voices, like they’ve been chewing on bad deals and worse oxygen for decades. The alien voices, meanwhile, are unsettling in the best way—neither overly monstrous nor cartoonish, but coldly indifferent, like a bureaucrat calculating how many human lives a planet is worth. That said, the middle act drags harder than a tug on a busted asteroid tether. The political maneuvering between human factions feels padded, and some of the fight scenes blur together like a zero-G brawl in a zero-visibility fog. Still, by the time the final battle hits, you’ll be too invested to care about the earlier lulls. If you want a sci-fi audiobook that doesn’t treat you like a fragile civilian, this one’s for you.
