Alien: River of Pain

I’ll admit, I approached *River of Pain* skeptical. Too many expanded-universe stories either retread old ground or dilute what makes *Alien* work. But this? This *gets* it. The full-cast narration is the star here—Anna Friel’s Ripley is weary but sharp, her delivery carrying the weight of someone who’s seen too much, while Colin Salmon’s corporate stooge drips with slimy authority. The real surprise, though, is how well the ensemble handles the chaos. Scenes with multiple characters (like the colonists’ last stand) never feel muddled; each voice is distinct, and the direction ensures the panic feels *earned*, not melodramatic. Golden’s script smartly avoids over-mythologizing the xenomorphs. The horror comes from what’s *implied*—a distant skittering in the vents, a colonist’s final, staticky transmission—rather than gore. That said, the pacing isn’t perfect. The first act juggles Ripley’s Earthbound plot and the Acheron disaster, and the cuts between them occasionally disrupt momentum. And while the sound design is stellar (those subtle, wet *clicks* of the xenomorphs will haunt you), a few action sequences rely too heavily on volume spikes to sell the terror. Still, these are minor quibbles. For fans craving *Alien*’s original tension—without the bloated runtime of later films—this is a masterclass in audio horror. Just maybe keep a nightlight on.
