He zeroes in on the moments that define her: the childhood prayer for brown eyes (so she could blend in overseas), the legal battles to protect "temple children," the crippling injury that left her bedridden for 20 years—yet she kept writing. It’s not comprehensive, but it’s *potent*. Langford’s narration is the audiobook equivalent of a well-tailored suit: impeccably fitted to the material, but not showy. Her pacing is deliberate, almost brisk, which works for the most part—except when she rushes through Carmichael’s later years, where a touch more gravitas might’ve underscored the tragedy of her suffering. The lack of ambient sound or musical cues is a missed opportunity; even a hint of Indian instrumentation during the temple rescue scenes could’ve added texture. Still, the starkness fits Carmichael’s own rejection of sentimentality. This isn’t an audiobook to lose yourself in—it’s one to *wrestle* with.
