About This Audiobook

What if the wolf from *Little Red Riding Hood* just wanted a friend? Or the Evil Queen in *Snow White* was acting out for her own twisted reasons? *Because You Love to Hate Me* flips classic fairy tales on their heads by letting the ‘villains’ defend their actions—often with surprising empathy and sharp wit. This isn’t your grandmother’s anthology: it’s a snarky, genre-bending collection where 13 BookTubers collaborate with bestselling authors to give the ‘bad guys’ a voice they’ve never had. The result is a mix of dark humor, feminist fury, and clever retellings that will make you question who you’ve been rooting for all along.

The audiobook’s layered narration—with Ameriie, Kevin T. Collins, and Julia Whelan each taking turns as both editors and performers—brings these stories to life with dynamic energy. Collins’ deep, gravelly tones suit brooding villains, while Whelan’s clear, expressive delivery shines in the snappier, dialogue-heavy tales. Ameriie’s presence as an editor adds a curator’s touch, ensuring the anthology feels cohesive despite its diverse voices. Production is crisp, with sound design subtly enhancing immersion without overpowering the performances.

Editor's Review ★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

I went into this expecting a gimmicky rehash of fairy tales, but *Because You Love to Hate Me* surprised me with its depth and originality. The standout here is definitely the narration. Julia Whelan’s performance in *The Sleeper and the Spindle*—a dark, feminist twist on *Sleeping Beauty*—is electric, her voice crackling with tension as she weaves through the eerie, suspenseful twists. Kevin T. Collins nails the melancholic villainy in *Little Red Riding Hood’s* retelling (*Red*), his voice dripping with weary regret that makes you reconsider the whole ‘wolf as predator’ trope. Ameriie’s own narration in *The Queen’s Guide* is playful and poised, grounding the anthology with a mischievous energy. That said, not every story lands. *The Most Dangerous of Deceits* (a *Ugly Duckling* retelling) feels weighed down by its dense prose, and the pacing drags in sections. Some tales lean too hard into the ‘villain as misunderstood hero’ angle, making their redemption arcs feel unearned. Still, the sheer audacity of this collection makes up for its flaws. If you love fairy tales with bite—especially those that challenge your sympathies—this audiobook is a must-listen. Just don’t expect every track to hit the same high note.
