Bitter Brambles

I went into Bitter Brambles expecting a light paranormal fluff, but Albany Walker delivered something far more sinister—and far more addictive. The narration by Bridget and Jake Bordeaux is a masterclass in contrast: Bridget’s velvety alto drips with honeyed menace as she voices our heroine’s growing obsession, while Jake Bordeaux’s guttural, almost demonic growl gives the institute’s lethal love interest a voice that vibrates through your ribs. Their pacing is flawless, stretching out the dread like taffy before snapping back into breathless, feverish romance at just the right moments. That said, the audiobook isn’t perfect. The production flubs a few line deliveries—most notably a jarring cut where Bridget’s voice suddenly drops mid-sentence—but these are minor hiccups in an otherwise polished performance. The real critique? The world-building occasionally leans too hard into ambiguity. I found myself wishing for clearer stakes beyond the vague ‘touch equals death’ rule, though Walker’s refusal to over-explain only amplifies the dread. Still, by the final act, I was so emotionally invested in these doomed lovers that I’d forgive a thousand production flaws. This isn’t just a great paranormal romance—it’s a story that burrows under your skin and refuses to let go.
