I went into *Bitter Sweet* expecting another predictable small-town romance, but LaVyrle Spencer delivered something far more nuanced. Maggie’s grief isn’t just a backdrop—it’s a living, breathing force that shapes every decision she makes, and Spencer doesn’t shy away from the messiness of it. The pacing is deliberate, almost meditative at times, which might frustrate listeners craving a faster burn, but it pays off in the authenticity of Maggie and Eric’s reunion. Sutton-Smith’s narration elevates the experience, particularly in her rendering of Maggie’s internal monologues. She nails the exhaustion in Maggie’s voice, the way her grief weighs her down, and the tentative hope that creeps in as she and Eric reconnect. That said, there were a few moments where the audio production felt slightly off—some background noises crept in during quieter scenes, which jolted me out of the immersion. Still, Sutton-Smith’s performance is so compelling that it’s easy to overlook minor technical hiccups. The ending is bittersweet in the best way, neither neatly resolved nor cruelly open-ended, just honest.
