I've always been drawn to Southern Gothic horror, and Blackwater delivers in spades. Matt Godfrey's narration is superb, capturing the cadence and drawl of the characters with ease. The pacing is deliberate and measured, building tension through the use of subtle, unsettling details. One of the standout aspects of the audiobook is its use of multiple narrative threads, which Godfrey navigates with aplomb. My only quibble is that some of the supporting characters can be a bit hard to distinguish at times, and I think a bit more attention to differentiating their voices would have been helpful. Overall, however, Blackwater is a mesmerizing listen that will appeal to fans of atmospheric horror and complex, layered storytelling.
