The chief, who narrates large sections in first-person, feels more wounded than domineering—a refreshing twist on the “strong silent type.” Grace’s writing shines in the details: the scent of pine resin in a drafty cabin, the way flour dust clings to sleeves during baking, the way a single shared blanket feels like a truce. That said, the first act drags slightly at 40 minutes in, with too much setup before the real action kicks off. The mail-order scheme villain also teeters into caricature at times, his motives feeling more cartoonish than credible. But those are minor quibbles. The audiobook’s production is otherwise crisp, with subtle sound design that never distracts from the dialogue. By the final act, when the truth about the heroine’s past unfolds, I was fully invested—something rare for a book marketed as “light” Christian fiction.
