As someone who's spent their fair share of time devouring courtroom dramas, I was blown away by the sheer audacity of Bum Deal's premise. Levine takes the classic 'guilty until proven innocent' trope and turns it on its head, presenting us with a case that's seemingly built on nothing but circumstantial evidence. As the trial unfolds, Lassiter's determination to prove his client's guilt becomes increasingly admirable, even if I'm not entirely convinced by the plot twists. That said, the narrative's biggest strength lies in its ability to stay one step ahead of the listener, making it impossible to predict what will happen next. Of course, not everything works to perfection. At times, the supporting characters feel a bit one-dimensional, with Solomon and Lord's banter coming across as more caricatured than nuanced. Still, these minor quibbles can't detract from the sheer enjoyment of listening to Bum Deal. With a runtime of just over 7 hours, this audiobook is a quick and satisfying listen that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Luke Daniels's narration is, as ever, a major draw, bringing a level of depth and authenticity to the story that's hard to find in many audiobooks. Overall, I'd highly recommend Bum Deal to anyone looking for a gripping, twisty thriller that will keep them up late at night.
