Captivation Creek

I’ll admit, I rolled my eyes at first when *Captivation Creek* opened with yet another ‘city girl returns to her dead mother’s hometown’ premise. But within 30 minutes, Vanessa Edwin’s narration had me hooked—not because she plays the heroine as likable (she doesn’t), but because she leans *hard* into the character’s prickly defensiveness. It’s a masterclass in how voice acting can turn a trope on its head. Alastair Haynesbridge, meanwhile, does something rare: he makes the strong-silent-type *sound* like a real person, not a romance-novel caricature. His pauses feel earned, his gruffness hiding something sharper than the usual ‘brooding alpha’ act. The story’s strength lies in its refusal to romanticize small-town life. The mystery—unfolding through journal entries and gossip-laden diner scenes—feels organic, not tacked on. That said, the middle act drags when the romance subplot takes over, and Kingsley’s habit of ending chapters on manufactured cliffhangers grows old fast. (Yes, we *know* they’re attracted to each other; we don’t need another ‘almost-kiss’ interrupted by a conveniently timed phone call.) Still, the final act delivers a gut-punch of emotional resolution that justifies the journey, especially in audio, where the narrators’ chemistry sells the quieter, more introspective moments. If you love romances where the setting is practically a third character and the leads have to *earn* their happy ending, this one’s worth the credit. Just be prepared to fast-forward through a few eye-roll-worthy ‘will they/won’t they’ beats.
