John Telfer’s narration is the secret weapon here; his voicework for Inspector Bencolin alone—equal parts weary aristocrat and razor-sharp observer—made me feel like I was eavesdropping on a master detective mid-monologue. The production quality is crisp, with subtle ambient sounds (rustling cloaks, creaking floorboards) that never distract but always deepen the immersion. My only critique? Some of Carr’s early exposition drags like a wet blanket over a fireplace, and by the midpoint, even the most patient listener might crave a faster tempo. That said, the payoff is worth it. The locked-room mechanism is ingenious, the German folklore sprinkled throughout feels authentic rather than tacked-on, and the final act’s reveal left me audibly gasping—something I haven’t done during an audiobook’s climax in years. Telfer’s performance sells the horror as much as the deduction, which is rare in traditional mysteries. If you’re hunting for a gothic-tinged puzzle with teeth, this one’s a keeper.
