Dunkle’s research is forensic in its depth—she doesn’t just tell you Charmian rode horses across the Sierra Madre; she makes you feel the saddle burns and the exhilaration of outrunning bandits. The book’s structure is clever, too, weaving Charmian’s own writing (read with verve by Moran) into the biography, so her voice isn’t filtered through some dusty academic lens. Moran’s performance is *exceptional*—she nails Charmian’s dry humor (listen to her delivery of Charmian’s dismissal of ‘delicate’ women: ‘I’d rather be a coyote’) and the quieter moments, like her grief after miscarriages, which Dunkle handles with raw honesty. That said, the audiobook isn’t without flaws. The middle act sags slightly under the weight of Jack London’s fame—Dunkle occasionally gets pulled into his orbit when Charmian’s own story is far more compelling. And while Moran’s narration is mostly pitch-perfect, her attempt at Jack’s gruff voice veers into caricature in a few spots. But these are quibbles. The real triumph here is how Dunkle and Moran refuse to sand down Charmian’s edges. She’s messy, ambitious, sometimes selfish, and utterly magnetic. By the end, you won’t just understand why she mattered—you’ll wish you’d known her. Or at least had the guts to ride shotgun on one of her adventures.
