Halstead’s writing thrives in this format—his dialogue is snappy, his set pieces (a drone strike interrupted by a luau, a Russian oligarch’s yacht doubling as a command center) are vivid, and his knack for exposing the absurdity of great-power politics is *chef’s kiss*. That said, the audiobook isn’t without flaws. The pacing stumbles in the middle during a protracted negotiation scene that feels more like a policy brief than a thriller, and the Virtual Voice occasionally butchers Polynesian place names (listen for the cringe-worthy pronunciation of *“Bora Bora”*). The lack of distinct character voices also means you’ll sometimes lose track of who’s speaking in dense diplomatic exchanges. But these are quibbles. What *China Conquers Polynesia* lacks in auditory polish, it makes up for in sheer audacity. It’s the rare thriller that’s both a gripping listen *and* a conversation starter—perfect for anyone who’s ever wondered what would happen if the next global flashpoint wasn’t Ukraine or Taiwan, but a five-star resort in Tahiti.
