I’ll admit, I side-eyed the title *Clowns* at first—sci-fi and circuses don’t exactly scream ‘serious,’ but Cawdron pulls off a masterclass in tension through mundanity. The audiobook drops you into a decade-long cover-up where the US government has been studying (and exploiting) alien performers who may or may not be what they seem. The Virtual Voice narrator is a polarizing choice: its robotic cadence strips away emotional cues, forcing you to lean into the text’s subtleties. At times, this works brilliantly—like during a chilling interrogation scene where the lack of inflection makes the dialogue feel like a transcript of something *real*. At others, though, it flattens the already sparse action, making the middle act drag like a classified file you’re forced to read in its entirety. Where *Clowns* shines is in its refusal to handhold. The aliens’ motives remain opaque, the ‘hero’ is a morally gray intelligence officer, and the circus setting—usually whimsical—becomes a stage for psychological warfare. The production is clean, but the Virtual Voice occasionally stumbles over Uzbek or Russian phrases, a minor but jarring reminder of its AI origins. Still, the payoff is worth it: the final act delivers a twist that’s less about explosions and more about the quiet horror of realizing humanity might be the villains. If you love sci-fi that’s cerebral over cinematic, this is a gem. Just don’t expect any laughs—these clowns don’t joke around.
