The novella’s length is both its strength and weakness—the story moves like a defibrillator shock, jolting you from one crisis to the next, but the compressed timeline means secondary characters (like Holly’s love interest) feel more like placeholders than people. That said, the medical details are *sharp*—Eason’s research shines in the helicopter scenes, where the hum of rotors and the beep of monitors become almost tactile through the narration. The Virtual Voice performance is… interesting. It’s not the warm, character-rich delivery you’d get from a human narrator, but the flat affect weirdly works for Holly’s exhausted professionalism. Where it stumbles is in romantic or introspective moments—lines that should ache or yearn land with all the emotion of a grocery list. Still, the production is clean, and the lack of background music keeps the focus squarely on the escalating tension. My biggest critique? The villain’s motives feel undercooked, more plot device than person. But if you’re after a quick, adrenaline-laced listen with a side of spiritual grit—no sermons, just a nurse praying through her panic—this delivers. Just don’t expect to linger over the prose.
