Cassie isn’t your typical kickass investigator; she’s a woman clinging to hope like it’s a life raft, and Santomasso makes that vulnerability feel like a punch to the gut. Sean Patrick Hopkins, meanwhile, nails the weary detective archetype, his tone dripping with the kind of dry skepticism that makes you wonder if he’s hiding something himself. The story’s pacing is its secret weapon. Ryan doesn’t waste time on red herrings that go nowhere—every misdirection feels like a knife twist, and the moments where the narrative *stalls*—not in a bad way, but in that horrifying ‘oh no, we’re not ready for this’ way—are brilliantly executed. My only real critique? The third act’s resolution felt a touch too neat after the relentless tension that came before it. Still, the audiobook’s production elevates the material; the way distant sirens and overlapping conversations seep into the mix makes Chicago feel like a living, breathing antagonist. If you’re in the mood to be unsettled rather than patted on the back, this one’s a slam dunk.
