The first hour of *Conquer the Thaw* feels like listening to a documentarian narrate a documentary about a civilization slowly devouring itself—and honestly, that was the exact effect Catherine seemed to be aiming for. By the time the power plays escalate from brutal to outright grotesque, however, the narration’s flat affect becomes a weapon, amplifying the horror without resorting to cheap theatrics. It’s not a performance that will make you feel warm and fuzzy, but it *does* make you feel like you’re observing something real, something happening to real people trapped in a system designed to crush them. That said, the audiobook isn’t without flaws. The worldbuilding, while impressive, occasionally demands more mental legwork than the narration’s pacing can comfortably support. There are moments where factions or rules are referenced so casually that I found myself rewinding to untangle the hierarchy, which disrupted the flow. Additionally, the ending feels abrupt—less a resolution and more a pause mid-sprint, as if Catherine deliberately left the door cracked for a sequel but didn’t quite open it wide enough for closure. Still, these are nitpicks in an otherwise gripping listen.
