Creation Mage 2

I’ll be honest: I went into *Creation Mage 2* expecting another by-the-numbers magic school story, but the dual narration by Parness and Perone sold me within the first chapter. Parness, in particular, nails the snarky, self-aware tone of her character—think a cross between *Kaz Brekker’s* scheming and *Luna Lovegood’s* eccentricity, but with a voice that’s entirely her own. Perone, meanwhile, grounds the more brooding sections with a performance that’s equal parts weary and determined. Their back-and-forth in dialogue-heavy scenes is electric, though I’ll admit the occasional abrupt shift between POVs took me a second to adjust to (a minor production quibble in an otherwise polished listen). The story itself is a masterclass in *escalation*. King doesn’t just raise the stakes—he *reinvents* them. The magic system, which revolves around "creation" (literally crafting matter from energy), leads to some of the most inventive fight scenes I’ve heard in fantasy. One standout moment involves a protagonist repurposing a broken statue mid-battle, and the narration makes the improvisation *visceral*. That said, the villain’s motivations could use a touch more depth; they’re compelling but occasionally veer into mustache-twirling territory. The pacing is breakneck, which works for the action but sometimes leaves emotional beats feeling rushed. Still, the sheer *fun* of the worldbuilding—especially the academy’s cutthroat, *Hunger Games*-lite competitions—more than makes up for it. If you love fantasy that balances brainy magic with adrenaline-pumping action, and narration that *performs* rather than recites, this is a no-brainer.
