This isn’t a hero who learns humility—it’s a man who weaponizes his flaws, and that’s refreshing. The Convocation’s magical hierarchy feels lived-in, with its own rigid etiquette and backstabbing politics, but the worldbuilding never overshadows the central relationship. That said, the romance takes a while to ignite. The slow burn is deliberate, but there were moments in the first third where I wished Kennedy would trust the chemistry more and dial back the political exposition. Balm’s performance is stellar, though not without quirks. Her Gabriel is hypnotic—equal parts icy control and simmering rage—but some secondary characters blur together in tone, particularly the female nobles. The production quality is flawless, though, with crisp audio that makes the magical duels *visceral*. My biggest critique? The climax feels slightly rushed after so much meticulous setup. Still, the final act delivers a payoff that’s equal parts satisfying and bittersweet, with a twist on the ‘happily ever after’ that fits Gabriel’s character perfectly. If you love antiheroes who *stay* morally gray, magic systems with real consequences, and narrators who can make a sneer sound seductive, this is your next listen.
