I was skeptical going into *Magic Reborn*—too many fantasy romances rely on tired tropes or undercooked stakes. But Kennedy’s world immediately hooked me with its morally gray Convocation, where magic isn’t just a tool but a currency of power and survival. Deborah Balm’s narration is the star here; her ability to shift between icy aristocratic tones for the Convocation’s elite and a sultry, almost desperate warmth for the protagonists’ moments alone is masterful. The pacing, however, stumbles in the first third—Kennedy lingers on world details that feel indulgent when the plot should be barreling forward. The romance itself is deliciously toxic, with a push-pull dynamic that kept me glued to the audio, even when I wanted to yell at one of the leads to run away. Balm’s performance sells the tension perfectly, though I wished the production had included more subtle sound cues for the magic sequences—right now, spells feel like they’re happening in a vacuum. That said, the payoff is worth it: the final act delivers a jaw-dropping twist that reframes everything. If you crave fantasy romance with bite and a narrator who makes you *feel* every word, this is your next obsession.
