Grisham’s later works can sometimes feel like variations on a theme, but this one hooked me in the first 30 minutes—not with a bang, but with the slow, creeping dread of a man realizing he’s out of his depth. Simon Latch isn’t your typical legal hero. He’s flawed, occasionally reckless, and his moral compass wobbles when the money gets tight. That ambiguity makes him fascinating, especially as Brauer’s performance strips away any pretense of heroism. His voice cracks with exhaustion during Simon’s late-night research binges, and there’s a hint of smugness when Simon outmaneuvers a smug opponent—you can *hear* the wheels turning. The plot’s strength lies in its procedural realism. Grisham doesn’t shy away from the tedium of legal work (there’s an entire scene where Simon combs through decades of property records), but Brauer’s delivery turns it into a puzzle-box thriller. My only critique? The mid-section sags slightly under the weight of subplots—an ex-wife’s sudden reappearance feels tacked on, and a side character’s fate is telegraphed too early. And while Brauer’s accent work is stellar, his female voices occasionally veer into caricature. Still, the finale is vintage Grisham: a courtroom showdown that hinges on a single, devastating detail you didn’t even know you’d missed.
