I’ve listened to a lot of Grisham, but *Der Klient* hit differently—partly because of Brauer’s narration, which turns what could’ve been a straightforward legal thriller into something far more sinister. His voice for Mark Sway is the standout: not cutesy or overly dramatic, but *exhausted*, like a kid who’s seen too much and knows he’s running out of moves. The scenes where Mark spars with Reggie Love, his reluctant lawyer, crackle with authenticity; Brauer makes their dynamic feel less like mentor-and-protégé and more like two cornered animals sizing each other up. The production quality is flawless—no distracting edits or volume spikes—but I’ll admit the mid-section drags slightly when the plot pivots to procedural legwork. Grisham’s strength has always been his ability to make legal minutiae gripping, but even he can’t sustain 20 hours of tension without a few lulls. What keeps this audiobook compelling, though, is its moral ambiguity. This isn’t a story about good vs. evil; it’s about survival in a world where the law is just another tool for the powerful. The mob’s enforcer, Barry ‘The Blade’ Muldanno, is terrifying not because he’s a cartoon villain, but because he’s *patient*—a detail Brauer underscores with chilling restraint. And the ending? Brutal. No neat resolutions, just the hollow victory of a kid who’s lost his childhood to a system that chews up the innocent. If you’re expecting *A Time to Kill*’s catharsis or *The Firm*’s slick escapism, this’ll disappoint. But if you want Grisham at his most raw—where the thrills come from psychological warfare, not gunfights—this is peak audiobook material. Just don’t start it before bed; the paranoia lingers.
