The Virtual Voice narration is the audiobook’s biggest stumbling block. While its monotone oddly suits Tanner’s stoic worldview, it flattens the supporting cast into indistinct drones—especially problematic in tense dialogue scenes where tone *should* carry the weight. The pacing drags in the middle, too, as Corley indulges in lengthy descriptions of flora and fauna that, while vivid, feel like padding. Still, there’s a stubborn authenticity here: the Everglades’ dangers aren’t just plot devices, and Tanner’s resourcefulness is satisfyingly grounded.
