The flat, almost clinical tone makes the story’s brutality hit harder, like a coroner’s report read aloud. There’s no performative grit in the delivery, which forces you to focus on Corley’s writing, and that’s a good thing. His dialogue crackles with authenticity, especially in the scenes between the protagonist, a washed-up cop named Harlan, and the town’s old-timers who speak in coded resentments. The pacing is where this audiobook shines: the first act simmers, the midpoint explodes (literally), and the finale doesn’t cop out with easy justice. That said, the Virtual Voice *does* struggle with emotional nuance in key moments. A human narrator might’ve sold Harlan��s quiet despair better—here, it occasionally feels like the text is being *reported* rather than *felt*. And while the terrorist subplot is gripping, the transition from small-town drama to geopolitical stakes sometimes feels abrupt, like two different books stitched together. Still, the trade-off is worth it for Corley’s unflinching look at how poverty and desperation turn neighbors into enemies. If you’re a fan of Daniel Woodrell’s bleak lyricism or S.A. Cosby’s morally complex thrillers, this will scratch that itch. Just don’t expect a feel-good ending—or a narrator who’ll hold your hand through the darkness.
