About This Audiobook

Meet Rylan Dain, a smuggler with a death wish and a knack for cheating the reaper. After he accidentally triggers a magical catastrophe that topples a city and pisses off a god, he’s branded the world’s most wanted man—not that it slows him down. *Dragons of Gold* is a relentless, gleefully reckless fantasy that blends the grit of a heist gone wrong with the soaring stakes of a world on the brink of divine war. Genji’s worldbuilding crackles with invention: magitech airships, cursed bloodlines, and gods who trade in favors like black-market dealers. The plot hinges on Rylan’s desperate bid to outrun his mistakes, but the real draw is the world’s seedy underbelly—where every ally is a liability and every victory feels like a pyrrhic joke.

Narrated by Sylvester Frost and Ellory Lane, this audiobook is a two-headed beast, each voice a perfect match for Rylan’s cynical charm and the god’s honeyed menace. Frost’s raspy growl sells Rylan’s world-weariness, while Lane’s velvety cadence drips with the faux-sincerity of a deity who’d sooner skin you alive than grant a wish. Their chemistry is electric, though Lane’s tendency to over-enunciate in dramatic moments occasionally pulls you out of the immersion. Still, the production is polished, with immersive sound design that makes the magitech battles feel like a blockbuster—if blockbusters had more existential dread.

Editor's Review ★★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

I’ll admit, I was skeptical when *Dragons of Gold* billed itself as a “godpunk” heist fantasy, but Genji delivers in spades. Sylvester Frost’s narration is the audiobook’s secret weapon; his delivery of Rylan’s internal monologues—snarky, self-loathing, and darkly funny—makes the protagonist feel like a cousin to Locke Lamora if he’d been raised in a scrapyard by a drunk engineer. Ellory Lane, meanwhile, chews scenery as the capricious god Nihil, her voice oozing false warmth before snapping into something ancient and hungry. The pacing is relentless, with Genji refusing to let the reader catch their breath, and the world’s lore is doled out like a feast—just when you think you’ve got a handle on the rules, the rug gets yanked out. That said, the story’s insistence on calling itself a “heist” feels like a stretch by the third act, when the plan devolves into a series of increasingly desperate gambits. And while Frost is fantastic, his Rylan can occasionally sound like a caricature of a lovable rogue, especially when the stakes get high. But these are minor quibbles in what’s otherwise a riotously fun, high-stakes fantasy with heart, humor, and more than a few gut-punch moments. If you crave fantasy that’s equal parts clever and chaotic—with a side of divine cosmic horror—this is your next obsession.
