Echo in Time

But Hill sidesteps both pitfalls with a plot that’s as intellectually engaging as it is emotionally gripping. The first act hooks you with a heist-like mission to destroy a time machine, but the real magic is in how the story unspools *after* the explosion. Taylor and Joseph’s dynamic is electric, not because they’re insta-love soulmates, but because their trust is hard-won, tested by betrayals and impossible choices. Doddy’s narration sells this perfectly; his Joseph is gruff but vulnerable, and his Taylor crackles with defiance, especially in the scenes where she’s outmaneuvering authority figures twice her age. That said, the middle act drags slightly—there’s a stretch where the time-jumping logic gets convoluted, and I found myself rewinding to track the timeline. (A minor map or appendix in the physical book might’ve helped, but audio listeners are left to piece it together.) And while the romance is well-developed, the villain’s motives feel undercooked, relying a bit too much on generic ‘power-hungry scientist’ tropes. Still, the final act more than makes up for it with a gut-punch twist that recontextualizes everything. The sound design is understated but effective: a distant hum during time jumps, the echo of footsteps in a hollow corridor—small touches that pull you deeper into the world.
