Not because it’s poorly made—far from it—but because Coates’ prose, delivered in Ordorika’s unhurried cadence, demands you sit with its discomfort. The section on Palestine, in particular, is a gut-punch; Coates doesn’t lecture, but his observations about how ‘the map is the story’ linger like a bruise. Ordorika’s performance is pitch-perfect here—his voice dips into a near-whisper during the more personal asides, as if he’s sharing a secret you’re not sure you’re meant to hear. That said, the audiobook isn’t without flaws. The transitions between locations can feel abrupt, and Coates’ signature density occasionally clashes with the audio format; you’ll rewind to catch a turn of phrase, only to realize you’ve missed the next three sentences. (A printed companion might help.) And while Ordorika’s neutral Spanish serves the text well, I wished for more tonal variation in the dialogue-heavy moments—some exchanges blend together. Still, these are quibbles. *El mensaje* is the rare audiobook that feels *necessary*, a work that challenges you to interrogate not just the world, but how you’ve been taught to see it.
